Comprised of multiple embossed layers of stainless steel with the outer layers utilizing a Viton rubber coating. Compressed operating thickness is 0.051". Cometic MLS (Multi-Layer Steel) Head Gaskets provide maximum sealing performance for todays high output engines and require no sealants. MLS gaskets are ideal for both aluminum heads to aluminum blocks and aluminum heads to cast iron blocks. They can withstand the shearing force created by the two materials. MLS gaskets have increased strength because they are comprised of multiple layers of stainless steel; which also creates the ability to rebound and resist corrosion. The outer layers are embossed and coated on both sides with Viton (a flour elastomer rubber based material that is heat resistant to 250 C/ 482 F). Viton is designed to meet the demands of a variety of harsh sealing environments, load conditions, and surface finishes. The center or shim layer is uncoated stainless steel, which can be varied to accommodate multiple thickness requirements.

About this Cylinder Head Gasket

The COMETIC GASKET CGSC4541-051 cylinder head gasket seals the joint between the engine block and cylinder head, keeping combustion pressure, coolant and oil in their own passages. A failed head gasket can lead to overheating and serious engine damage.

Frequently asked questions

What are the signs of a blown head gasket?

White exhaust smoke with a sweet smell, unexplained coolant loss, overheating, milky residue in the oil or under the filler cap, bubbles in the coolant tank, or a misfire on one cylinder. A combustion leak test can confirm it.

What should I replace along with the head gasket?

Most European engines use single-use, torque-to-yield head bolts that must be replaced. Replace any other gaskets and seals disturbed during the job, and have the head checked for flatness and cracks before refitting.

Why did the head gasket fail?

Overheating is the most common cause, often from a cooling-system failure. Find and fix the underlying cause, such as a leaking hose, failed water pump or radiator, before or during the repair.

Can I replace a head gasket myself?

It is a major job that requires dismantling the top of the engine, resetting the timing and following the exact bolt tightening sequence and angles. It is best done by an experienced technician.

How do I make sure this cylinder head gasket fits my car?

Compare the part numbers listed on this page with the number on your old part or in your vehicle's parts catalog, and check the fitment information. If you are unsure, contact us with your VIN before ordering.
