It pushes coolant around the cooling system so heat can be carried from the engine to the radiator. Many modern European engines use electric water pumps, and some also have an auxiliary pump for the heater or turbocharger.

Coolant leaking from the pump or its weep hole, a whining or grinding noise from a belt-driven pump, the engine temperature rising, heater output dropping, or a warning message from an electric pump.

Replace the gasket or O-rings and any single-use bolts. On belt-driven pumps it is a good time to replace the drive belt, tensioner and idler pulleys; on timing-belt-driven pumps, replace the pump with the timing belt.

Fill with the coolant your car's manufacturer specifies and bleed the air out following your car's procedure. Cars with electric water pumps often need a bleed routine run through the car or a diagnostic tool.
