White exhaust smoke with a sweet smell, unexplained coolant loss, overheating, milky residue in the oil or under the filler cap, bubbles in the coolant tank, or a misfire on one cylinder. A combustion leak test can confirm it.

Most European engines use single-use, torque-to-yield head bolts that must be replaced. Replace any other gaskets and seals disturbed during the job, and have the head checked for flatness and cracks before refitting.

Overheating is the most common cause, often from a cooling-system failure. Find and fix the underlying cause, such as a leaking hose, failed water pump or radiator, before or during the repair.

It is a major job that requires dismantling the top of the engine, resetting the timing and following the exact bolt tightening sequence and angles. It is best done by an experienced technician.
