It locates the wheel and controls its movement as the suspension travels, keeping alignment angles consistent. Bushings at the body end and a ball joint at the wheel end allow that movement while absorbing vibration.

Clunking over bumps, vague or wandering steering, vibration through the steering wheel, uneven tire wear, cracked or torn bushings, or play in the ball joint.

Replacing both sides of the same axle keeps handling balanced, and when one side is worn the other is often close behind. Many owners replace related arms and bushings at the same time.

Tighten the bushing bolts with the car at normal ride height, not with the suspension hanging, or the bushings will be pre-loaded and wear early. Use new bolts or nuts where the manufacturer specifies it, and have an alignment done afterwards.
