About this Belt Tensioner & Idler Pulley

The GATES 38314 is part of the accessory drive that runs the alternator, A/C compressor and other components. The tensioner keeps the drive belt at the right tension and idler pulleys guide it, and their bearings wear over time.

Frequently asked questions

What does a belt tensioner do?

It applies constant pressure to the drive belt so it grips the pulleys without slipping, and it absorbs the belt's movement as engine speed changes. Idler pulleys guide the belt around its path.

What are the signs of a worn tensioner or idler pulley?

A squeal or chirp from the front of the engine, a rumbling or grinding bearing noise, a belt that flutters, jumps or wears unevenly, or a tensioner arm that bounces or has visible play.

What should I replace along with it?

Replace the drive belt at the same time, and consider replacing the other pulleys if they have similar mileage, since their bearings wear at a similar rate.

Can I replace a tensioner myself?

Usually, yes. Note or photograph the belt routing before removing it, release the tension with the correct tool, and check the new belt sits correctly in every pulley groove before starting the engine.

How do I make sure this belt tensioner or pulley fits my car?

Compare the part numbers listed on this page with the number on your old part or in your vehicle's parts catalog, and check the fitment information. If you are unsure, contact us with your VIN before ordering.
