It transmits torque to the wheel while its CV joints allow the angle and length to change as the suspension travels and, on front axles, as the wheels turn.

A clicking noise when turning, especially under acceleration, a vibration that increases with speed, a clunk when taking off, or grease thrown around the inside of the wheel from a torn CV boot.

If a torn boot is caught early, before dirt and water have damaged the joint, a boot kit can be enough. Once the joint clicks or has lost its grease, replacing the complete axle is usually the better repair.

Use a new axle nut or bolt if the manufacturer specifies a single-use fastener, and a new seal at the transmission if it leaks. Tighten the axle nut to the specified torque with the car on the ground.
