It draws fuel from the tank and delivers it to the engine at the pressure the injection system requires. If pressure drops, the engine can run lean, lose power or fail to start.

Long cranking before the engine starts, hesitation or loss of power under load, stalling, a whining or buzzing noise from the tank, or a no-start. A clogged filter, a failed relay or a wiring fault can cause the same symptoms, so check fuel pressure before replacing the pump.

On many cars the pump is reached through an access panel under the rear seat or trunk floor; on others the tank has to be lowered. Relieve the fuel system pressure, disconnect the battery, work in a well-ventilated area away from sparks and flames, and fit a new seal or O-ring at the pump flange. If you are unsure, have a professional install it.

Replace the tank seal or O-ring and, if your car has a separate one, the fuel filter. Inspect the strainer and the electrical connector. If the old pump failed because of dirt or debris, clean the tank before fitting the new pump.
