About this Wheel Bearing & Hub

The SNR R154.66 wheel bearing lets the wheel spin smoothly on the car while carrying its weight. On many modern cars the bearing is built into a hub assembly that also holds the ABS sensor ring.

What are the signs of a bad wheel bearing?

A humming, growling or rumbling noise that rises with speed and often changes when turning, play or roughness in the wheel when lifted, uneven tire wear, or an ABS warning light.

Should I replace wheel bearings in pairs?

Replace the bearing that is worn. Many owners replace both sides of the axle if the car has high mileage, since the other side is often close behind.

Is a hub assembly easier to install than a bearing?

Usually, yes. A complete hub assembly bolts in, while a press-in bearing has to be pressed out of and into the knuckle with a press or special tool.

What should I replace along with the bearing?

Use a new axle nut or hub bolts where the manufacturer specifies single-use fasteners, and tighten them to the specified torque. Check that the ABS sensor and its ring are clean and undamaged.
