What does an A/C compressor do?

It compresses low-pressure refrigerant vapor into high-pressure vapor and pumps it through the system. Without it the refrigerant does not circulate and the A/C blows warm air.

What are the signs of a failing A/C compressor?

Warm air from the vents, grinding or squealing when the A/C is switched on, a compressor clutch that does not engage (on clutch-type compressors), or refrigerant and oil leaking at the compressor.
