About this Lift Support

The STABILUS 578873 lift support is a gas-charged strut that holds up your hood, trunk lid or tailgate. As it loses pressure with age, the lid becomes heavy to lift and may not stay open.

What are the signs of a worn lift support?

The hood, trunk or tailgate drops slowly or will not stay open, especially in cold weather, or it feels much heavier to lift than before.

Should I replace lift supports in pairs?

Yes. If there are two supports, replace both together so they share the load evenly; a single new support alongside a worn one wears out quickly.

How do I replace a lift support safely?

Have a helper hold the lid or prop it securely before removing the old support, because the lid can fall. Most supports clip or snap onto ball studs and install with the body end up as specified.

Which support do I need?

Hood, trunk and tailgate supports differ in length and force, and some cars use different parts on each side or for versions with power tailgates. Check the part numbers and fitment on this page against your car.
