It relieves pressure inside the engine by drawing blow-by gases back into the intake, while an oil separator or valve keeps oil out of the intake. Correct crankcase pressure protects seals and gaskets.

A whistling or howling noise at idle, rough idle, lean-running fault codes, higher oil consumption, oil leaks from seals, blue smoke, or suction at the oil filler cap strong enough to hold the cap down.

Crankcase vent hoses become brittle with heat and age, so inspect and replace cracked hoses and fittings at the same time. On many European engines, the valve cover and separator are serviced together.

Many parts are accessible with basic tools, though some separators sit under the intake manifold. Handle old plastic fittings carefully, as they can break during removal.
