About this Camshaft

The Schrick 0457A1721-R0 camshaft opens and closes the engine's valves in time with the pistons. The shape of its lobes sets how far and for how long each valve opens, which shapes the engine's power delivery.

Frequently asked questions

What does a camshaft do?

As it turns, its lobes push the valves open, directly or through followers or rocker arms, then let the springs close them. Lift and duration determine how much air the engine can breathe.

What are the signs of a worn camshaft?

A ticking or tapping from the top of the engine, loss of power, misfires, and visibly worn or pitted lobes when inspected. Metal particles in the oil can also point to cam or follower wear.

Will a performance camshaft need other upgrades?

Often. More aggressive camshafts may need stronger valve springs, adjusted valve timing and an engine tune to run properly. Check the maker's requirements in the product details.

Can I install a camshaft myself?

It requires removing the timing drive, locking the engine at the correct timing with engine-specific tools and setting the timing precisely. Mistakes can damage the valves and pistons, so it is best done by an experienced technician.

How do I make sure this camshaft fits my car?

Compare the part numbers listed on this page with the number on your old part or in your vehicle's parts catalog, and check the fitment information. If you are unsure, contact us with your VIN before ordering.
