How does a brake pad wear sensor work?

A wire loop inside the sensor tip sits at the pad's minimum thickness. When the pad wears down, the rotor wears through the loop, breaking the circuit and turning on the warning light.

When do I need to replace the sensor?

Replace it whenever the warning has come on, because the worn loop cannot be reused, and whenever it is damaged during a pad change. Many owners replace it with every pad change.
