The steering rack boot slides over the inner tie rod to keep dirt and debris from diminishing the service life of the tie rod. Over time the boots are known to dry out and crack, allowing contaminates to enter into the inner tie rod area. Replace your damaged boot at the first sign of cracks or wear, or when replacing the inner tie rod, to keep your power steering system protected properly.
