About this A/C Compressor

The MAHLE BEHR ACP 721 000S A/C compressor is the heart of your car's air-conditioning system. Driven by the engine's accessory belt, it pressurizes the refrigerant and circulates it through the condenser and evaporator so the cabin can be cooled.

What does an A/C compressor do?

It compresses low-pressure refrigerant vapor into high-pressure vapor and pumps it through the system. Without it the refrigerant does not circulate and the A/C blows warm air.

What are the signs of a failing A/C compressor?

Warm air from the vents, grinding or squealing when the A/C is switched on, a compressor clutch that does not engage (on clutch-type compressors), or refrigerant and oil leaking at the compressor. Low refrigerant, a failed pressure sensor or an electrical fault can cause similar symptoms, so have the system diagnosed first.

Can I replace an A/C compressor myself?

Removing and fitting the compressor is mechanical work, but the refrigerant must be recovered before the system is opened, and the system must be evacuated and recharged afterwards with the correct refrigerant (R134a or R1234yf) and amount. That needs A/C service equipment, so many owners have a shop handle those steps.

What should I replace along with the compressor?

Replace the receiver-drier or accumulator and the expansion valve or orifice tube, flush the lines and condenser (especially after an internal compressor failure), and fit new O-rings. Check the compressor oil type and quantity against your vehicle's specification. Many compressor warranties require these steps.
